Information about Närsorterat

Närsorterat – recycling close to home is best

Easy recycling near your home
in Mora, Orsa and Älvdalen

Say hello to Närsorterat and the four-compartment bins!

In late 2026, packaging collection is moving to your doorstep. We call it Närsorterat, and it is a new legal requirement from 1 January 2027.

Närsorterat can be organised in different ways, but the legal requirement is the same no matter where you live in Sweden. In Mora, Orsa and Älvdalen, we have chosen two four-compartment bins – a simple and user-friendly solution. You sort your packaging right where you live, so there is no need to take your recycling to the recycling station. We collect your waste from your home.

Easier for you – better for the environment.

Detached houses and small residential properties

If you live in a detached house or other small residential property, your existing waste bins will be replaced with two four-compartment bins that together hold eight different types of waste. This means you can sort food waste, residual waste, packaging and newspapers right at home.

This also applies if you have a holiday home with its own waste bins.

Shared collection

Närsorterat applies to all households, regardless of housing type. If you live in a block of flats, a housing cooperative or a joint property association, the property owner is responsible for arranging a solution where the same types of waste can be sorted at or near the property.

Get to know the four-compartment bins

Each property will receive two four-compartment bins with room for a total of eight types of waste. This means you can sort all your packaging right where you live.

Easier for you – better for the environment.

How it works

When you sort correctly, your waste can become new resources. Here you can follow its journey from your home. Read more about sorting and recycling at sopor.nu.

You sort at home

At home, you sort all your packaging, newspapers and food waste into the four-compartment bins.

We collect from your home

Our four-compartment vehicles keep everything separate – nothing is mixed in the vehicles. The waste is then taken to a transfer station and on to a recycling facility.

The waste is recycled

The packaging is processed, washed, sorted further and recycled into new raw material.

It becomes new products

The recycled raw material can be used again to make new products. This saves energy and natural resources.

How the four-compartment bins are emptied

The four-compartment bins are emptied by special vehicles with four separate compartments, which keep all the waste separate – just like in the bins.

The waste is then taken to a transfer station, where each type of waste is unloaded separately and stored temporarily until it is transported onwards.

While we wait for our own four-compartment vehicles, take a look at this example from another municipality.

The recycling stations are being phased out

Once Närsorterat is introduced, the packaging you used to take to the recycling stations will be collected from your home instead. The recycling stations will therefore be phased out.

Larger and bulky packaging can be taken to a recycling centre or to new, easily accessible collection points designated for this type of packaging.

What will it cost?

The charge is made up of two parts:

Basic fee – a fixed annual fee that everyone pays. It covers shared costs such as the recycling centres, customer service, paper bags for food waste and administration. You pay it regardless of how much you throw away.

Collection fee – the cost of collecting and emptying your bins at your property.

The 2027 waste tariff, which includes Närsorterat, has been decided by each of the municipal councils in Mora, Orsa and Älvdalen.

Adapt to your needs

The two four-compartment bins suit an average household, but every household is different – and the amount of each type of waste you produce can change over time. If you have little waste and don’t use the full capacity of your bins, you can share bins with a neighbour. The capacity is then adapted to your needs, and you share the cost of collection.

Need more space?

If one type of waste increases temporarily, such as paper packaging around the holidays or after a big shop, you can leave an extra bag out on your regular collection day. If you need more space over a longer period, for example more paper packaging with teenagers at home or more residual waste with children in nappies, you can order an extra bin that is emptied together with your regular bins, from SEK 300 per year.
